Temporary Closure: Air Park will temporarily close beginning January 20 and will reopen in early March.
How do airplanes fly? Air Park provides a hands-on look at the forces that lift planes, animals, insects and other objects off the ground and soaring through the air.
Air Park looks at four main forces that make flight possible: gravity, lift, thrust and drag. All four of these forces are explained by activities that allow guests to see the forces in action: build a paper airplane and see if the design will soar; learn how kites are created and how they can fly; design and build a craft that floats on a column of air; and make a pinwheel and test it on a table of air.
“Playful learning encourages exploration of science, math and technology in innovative ways, which supports the mission of Innovation Gallery and Studios,” said Kit Goolsby, Executive Vice President of Education for the Museum. “Air Park is another extraordinary learning environment for guests of all ages to use their imaginations, curiosity and creativity.”
The exhibition is designed to give Museum guests a closer look at the scientific concepts behind some of their favorite summer activities, according to Amy Romans, Concept Design & Creative Development with the Museum. “I wanted children and their families to have the opportunity to explore, experiment and interact with the science behind kites, wind and flight all summer long”

Kite Creation: Learn how kites are designed.
Real Hang Gliders: Watch real footage of hang gliders as they take off, soar through the sky and land in a captivating video montage as well as a real hang glider suspended from the ceiling.
Airplane Launcher: Design your own paper airplane and test it at the airplane launcher and see how far it will fly.
Air Tables: Design and build a craft that floats on a column of air. Which crafts fly the highest? Which hover with the most stability?
Bernoulli Blowers: Learn why beach balls magically float above a column of moving air.
Pinwheel Table: Design a twirling pinwheel and test it on a table of moving air.
